DIA-Lectures: Art of Rebellion: Black Art of the Civil Rights Movement

From 10 a.m. to noon, scholar Erin Falker will present a brief overview of the exhibition Say It Loud: Art, History, Rebellion, currently on view at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, where she works as assistant curator.  Falker will also highlight the Spiral artist collective, active from 1963 to 1965, whose art is represented in the Wright Museum’s exhibition and the DIA's exhibition Art of Rebellion: Black Art of the Civil Rights Movement. Both exhibitions are part of the city-wide commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Detroit rebellion.

From 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Detroit-born artist Mario Moore will discuss his painting Queen Mother Helen Moore on view in the DIA’s exhibition and other artworks in the mothers and sons series that was inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement.
