Punk House

September 8, 2017-January 7, 2018

Punk House, a companion program to Sonic Rebellion, will take place in the Mike Kelley Mobile Homestead during the fall of 2017. Curated by Cary Loren, Punk House is an exhibition of ephemera culled from the archive of Destroy All Monsters (DAM), an influential Michigan artist collective/band that included Mike Kelley, Cary Loren, Niagara, and Jim Shaw, and others will be presented drawing links to their dealings with protest and resistance. DAM created unorthodox music inspired by The Stooges, Albert Ayler, Sun Ra, the Velvet Underground and Sci-Fi B movies. The exhibition celebrates those active in the punk scene in Detroit. Punk House will focus on Tesco Vee, Times Stereo, Zoots coffeehouse and Orbit/White Noise (as well as DAM). Each represent roughly the ’70s-’00s in punk music and art activism. Punk House would be a collage of communes and punk aesthetics inside the Mobile Homestead. DAM’s vision and outsider beliefs and conveys the influences that drove DAM’s artistic and counter culture expression by presenting posters, flyers, photographs, blueprints, drawings, banners, magazines, and records produced in the 1970s and additional material produced more recently.
