Knight Arts Challenge announces winners, $1.3 million in grants

For artists looking to make their big break in the cultural arts scene, all it takes is a 150-word description of their latest project and they could win thousands of dollars. 

That's what happened for the 36 winners in the 2019 Knight Arts Challenge Detroit. Creative types from across the arts spectrum, including film, theater, literature, music, and artwork, will share more than $1.3 million in grants. The winners will be celebrated Thursday event at the Garden Theater in Detroit, the organization said in a news release. 

This year's winners include the Spencer Barefield Creative Arts Collective for hosting a reunion concert series of newly commissioned works of avant garde jazz performances, Midtown Detroit for its lights extravaganza, Dlectricity, and filmmaker Rola Nashef for starting a production company that focuses on Arab-American entertainment.
