A new dog park opens Friday at the corner of Cass Avenue and West Canfield, marking at least the second, official off-leash dog park to spring up in the city this year.

A grassroots effort to open an off-leash dog park on city-owned property in Corktown came to fruition with the launch of PetSmart P.U.P.'s Detroit Dog Park on 10,000 square feet at the corner of Rose and 17th Street last month.

The Midtown dog park is being sponsored by the development-focused non-profit Midtown Detroit, Inc. and by Shinola, a Detroit-based maker of watches, bikes and leather goods. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m.

The Michigan Humane Society will also host a pet adoption event from 4-7 p.m. at the park on Friday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Shinola will celebrate the one-year anniversary of its nearby flagship store at 441 W. Canfield St. The company will have a preview of a new pet accessories line that it developed in collaboration with photographer Bruce Weber at 10:30 a.m. Shinola and Weber will also host a "Dogs in Fashion Photography" exhibition at the store throughout the month of June.

Later, Shinola is hosting a block party on W. Canfield from 6-9 p.m.

Shinola was launched in 2011 by Fossil founder Tom Kartsotis, who put the company's headquarters and manufacturing in the Argonaut building at Detroit's College for Creative Studies at the CCS campus.
