Faculty Fellows Conference: The Post-Racial Era?

Each year the Humanities Center sponsors a Faculty Fellowship Competition on a specific theme. This year's theme was "The Post-Racial Era?". Fellowships provide Wayne State University faculty with funding to help pay for expenses related to their research projects, including travel, research assistance, summer salary and fringe benefits. Fellowships average $6,000 and recipients are expected to participate in the annual Faculty Fellows' Conference held the following spring.

Noel Night receives grant from DTE for LED holiday lighting

MDI affliate UCCA received $10,000 from DTE to support two LED holiday lighting displays at Noel Night.  A third location was added in 2009.  The two locations were Wayne State University's Old Main building the Sculpture Park on John R and the front entrance of the Detroit Institute of Arts.  The goal is to expand the LED lighting to one additional location each year, until the entire neighborhood is lit for this holiday event.  We would like to thank DTE for their support.

UCCA receives grant for Midtown Infrastructure Planning

MDI affiliate UCCA received $87,000 in funding from the Hudson-Webber Foundation to support the necessary planning for two key infrastructure projects in the Cultural Center/Wayne State University district.  The first project includes a parking structure analysis to determine the feasibility of adding additional parking to service the growing demands of the DIA, Museum of African American History and the Detroit Science Center.  The other infrastructure project will involve designing an engineering plan to upgrade the street lighting along Cass Avenue.

Midtown Lunch Bus

Every Thursday employees at Henry Ford, the DMC, and Wayne State can take advantage of the MDI affilate UCCA’s Lunch Bus program.  The program encourages these anchor institution employees to break their daily routine and venture out to experience the diverse selection of restaurants in the Midtown area.  In addition to this free shuttle, patrons of the Lunch Bus are also given 15% off their meals at all participating restaurants.

Live Midtown - Residential Incentive Program

In collaboration with Wayne State University (WSU), Henry Ford Health System (HFHS), and the Detroit Medical Center (DMC), Midtown Detroit, Inc. is administering "Live Midtown".  The residential program provides four types of incentives to eligible employees to entice people to move to Midtown and retain those who area already living in the area.  WSU, HFHS, and DMC will each invest funding during the pilot year of the program.  That investment has been matched by the Hudson-Webber Foundation and the Michigan State Housing Develoment Authority (MSHDA).

"Buy in Detroit" Trade Fairwdawd

Wayne State University, Henry Ford Health System, and the Detroit Medical Center will host the first "Buy in Detroit" Trade Fair.  The trade fair is part of a Midtown Detroit Initiative aiming to support the local economy.

The event is open to Detroit-based businesses who are interested in meeting with representatives from the three anchor institutions regarding the specifics of the "Buy in Detroit" Initiative and opportunities for local businesses.

The Auburn Development

Nearly an entire block of Cass Avenue at Canfield will be renovated into a mixed-use green-friendly development offering apartments and retail spaces.  The $12 million Auburn development, which broke ground last week, is being developed by the Roxbury Group and partners Invest Detroit and Midtown Detroit Inc.
