North Cass Community Garden

About the Garden

Located in Midtown on the southwest corner of Second Avenue and Willis Street, the North Cass Community Garden (NCCG) contains a total of 88 individual raised garden plots—3 ADA accessible 4’ x 8’ beds, 10 8’ x 12’ beds, and 75 4’ x 8’ beds. The NCCG is operated and maintained by Midtown Detroit, Inc., a not-for-profit community development organization that serves the Midtown and New Center neighborhoods of Detroit. The NCCG has year-round programming for its gardeners, including monthly weed & wine events, picnics, various classes and general maintenance sessions.

Implementation of the NCCG was made possible thanks to funds from the Kresge Foundation, First American Title, MGM Grand Casino, the Colin Hubbell Memorial Fund, and Landscape Forms. It was constructed in May 2009 with the help of over 70 volunteers. Garden clean up on three parcels of land took just 2 hours of work and filled two 30-yard dumpsters. The build-out of the garden took just three days thanks to the support of community members and local partners.

Eligibility to be an NCCG gardener includes residency in the City of Detroit and an ability to commit 4 hours of service to the garden each season. Read the Gardener Rules here.

Due to the high interest in being a gardener at the NCCG, a waiting list has been compiled and will be worked through as garden plots open.
